Elaine Robinson – Empowerment! Consulting

As a business owner and leader in my community I have made a commitment to always stay focused on my personal and professional development. For this reason I spent the past nine months in the Leadership Asheville Program learning about the new community I now call home. One of the most impactful models we discussed was the Seven Pillars of a Healthy Community (According to the Coalition for Healthier Cities and Communities.) They say healthy communities:    1. Practices ongoing dialogue 2.Generates leadership  3. Shapes its future  4. Embraces diversity  5. Knows  itself 6.Connects people & resources 7. Creates a sense of community (Outcome of the 1999 Healthy Community Agenda Campaign, USA)
Let’s first define community. A community can be something as small as your family or as large as your state. It can be professional, spiritual or community related. As a responsible leader you will want to consider the healthy community model and for this article three of the seven pillars.

Cures from the Past

For some people headaches are an occasional annoyance, for others a disabling chronic condition. There have been many creative headache cures throughout history. In China around 200 a.d., Hua Tho, a famous surgeon and the discoverer of anesthesia offered to relieve the emperor’s headaches by removing a portion of his skull.

In medieval Europe headaches were treated by applying a solution of vinegar and opium to the scalp. And, in the late 1800’s William Gowers, an eminent physician and founder of modern neurology emphasized the importance of a healthy diet. Failing that he recommended nitroglycerin dissolved in alcohol.
